Locally relevant stores can bring communities together by providing a comfortable, inviting gathering space for the residents.  As larger dining and retail stores expand into new locations, this attention to the local culture plays a large role in the level of success.  Having the talent to morph your brand to meet local tastes, while still maintaining brand identity, is no small feat.  In this month’s design:retail magazine, Starbucks is featured for doing just this.  http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/designretail/201403/index.php#/86

If creating completely different spaces for every location is overwhelming, companies can start by creating customized graphic treatments for walls, dividers, ceilings, and more.  SEG graphics can be easily and quickly installed while the graphic treatments can vary immensely.  With Dye Sublimation printing, images can be printed one-off, allowing for mass customization of printed designs.  I love this example of how larger designs have great hidden logos and messages within them without disturbing how the design fits the environment.
