The Rise of Narrow Fabrics

I love looking at consumer fashion for inspiration. Being able to go to a store and touch the materials first hand brings more life to the designs.  So often we think of materials as wide textiles, but narrow fabrics should not be overlooked.  In their 2015 sneaker design ‘Free Inneva Woven II’ Nike used narrow fabrics, woven together for enhanced performance and design. The variable widths of laces/webbing and overlapping pattern looks like a magnified woven textile and brings about feelings of hand crafting which is sometimes lost in the  mass production world.

Webbing and other narrow fabrics come in a variety of widths and colors. They can be interlaced, tensioned at various angles, hung in strips to create a stripe effect and more.  These narrow fabrics are made to handle lots of force without fail and release wrinkles at will; making them perfect for an event or exhibit design.
